Quiet Time With Jesus – Sin

Someone says: ‘Sin is the human condition.’ Do you agree?

Speaking for myself, I want freedom – freedom to choose, freedom to decide. That’s what I do every day especially now that I have retired (not working for a salary). I still work but the reward is self-satisfaction.

What is self-satisfaction? It is a sense of accomplishment that only I can appreciate and that is enough for me. I do not need external / expressed compliments / thanksgiving. If I receive them, I’m happy but the self-satisfaction that I gain (as a reward) is the inner joy that God puts into my heart. Having said that, I am mindful that I must not become proud (like Lucifer). The moment that I sense a little pride creeping it, I will turn it into praise… Thanks be to God!

From my journal: I must remember that my body is the temple of God. I must take good care of my body. My children are God’s gift to me. I must raise them responsibly. My life especially time, talents, and treasures are God’s gifts. I must use them wisely.

A self-sufficient man worships himself. He believes that his life is in his own hands. I know of such a man. He had started life with nothing and he worked very hard until he became rich (in the eyes of man). He has never turned to God. Today, he doesn’t need anything because he has done the right thing at the right time. He is boasting about his wealth, even his health (doing the right thing at the right time). However, every man has to face death. This man believes in after-death. He knows that he has no control after he leaves this materialistic world. So, in order to provide for his after-death, he bought a niche – an expensive one. Does he really think he will ‘live’ in that niche after he dies?

‘Rebellion includes disobedience and self-centredness. We turn from God when we want to do things our way. The seven deadly sins are pride, greed, lust, anger, gluttony, envy, and sloth. These are called source sins because they are the fountainhead of sinning. But behind them is a wilful, disobedient, self-centred rebellion.’ (Excerpt from a book ‘Disciple’ – Becoming disciples through Bible Study)

Have you heard people say, “I don’t sin a lot, but I do sin a little” or “I don’t commit any big sin, only small sin” or “what I did does not hurt anybody” or “everybody does it” etc. Sin is the human condition. It’s like a disease. It is widespread. The whole human race is infected.

I would like to share from the book ‘Disciple’:

Life to God meant fulfilment, joy, and a relationship of unblemished love. Life to the serpent meant eating, sleeping and going through the motions of living. Unquote

How often do we follow the world and feel happy? Someone said that God is full of grace and mercy that He will never remove His covering over us. I thought about David, Peter and Judas and what they did after they realized that they have sinned against God. I think God lifted His covering over Judas. Let’s also remember that Judas was one of the Twelve Disciples.

Sin is the human condition but there is HOPE. Hope is a Person. His name is JESUS.

Adam and Eve sinned and was driven out of the garden of Eden. They were covered in God’s glory in the garden but they took the covering off when they ate the forbidden fruit. One bite kills! One bite contaminates, infects… it is irreversible!

Today, we are aware of deadly and infectious diseases and we seek ways to prevent being infected. We go for vaccination to protect our physical body. What about the contamination of our heart and mind? What kind of vaccination is available? If you ask me, I would say, “The Word of God.” Take a bite of it every day. It will keep the devil away. God’s words set boundaries, guide-posts (to guide us along the straight and narrow path) and guard-posts (to warn us of danger that can kill, steal or destroy). Obedience is important. When we know the boundaries, why do we want to test God’s omniscience?

God is pure and holy. He cannot tolerate sin but we need not be fearful because God is love. His love is everlasting - how do you think God loves without violating His purity and holiness?

God gave His one and only Son to die on the cross for us. Whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but to SAVE THE WORLD THROUGH HIM.

Thanks be to God! Glory to God! Hallelujah! Amen!
