I can never forget the first time when I had a terrible headache. It was in a very cold meeting room where we gather to discuss the plans for the future i.e. what we plan to achieve in the coming year. I was only the Deputy Manager of a department in a bank, but the pressure that I put on myself to register everything was too much to bear.
Today, I remember a dear friend who died at the age of 52. The pressure of her work led to a stroke and subsequently death.
Why do we get caught up in tension and stress? Someone wrote: One answer is that we are trying to live life against itself.
An ex-colleague told me that the fear of losing her son when he was diagnosed with a rare disease had ‘damaged’ her brain. She forgot a ‘chunk’ of Scripture. Can you imagine? Have you ever experienced a moment of intense stress and your mind goes blank?
Whenever I face some form of tension or stress or worry, my head will start to hurt… I believe it is God’s way of telling me to take a break. I will go to God in prayer and I will apply God’s word to my situation:
“Rejoice in the Lord always. I will always rejoice and praise the Lord for who He is and what He has done for me. My gentleness will be evident to all. The Lord is near. He is always near. I am NOT anxious about anything. In everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, I will present my requests to God.”
God’s word (promise):
And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard my heart and my mind in Christ Jesus.
Whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable – if anything is excellent or praiseworthy – I will THINK ABOUT SUCH THINGS.
Apostle Paul wrote to the Philippians:
Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me – PUT IT INTO PRACTICE.
God’s word (promise):
And the God of peace will be with you.
Dear Father God,
I am absolutely amazed by Your provision and protection. Thank You Lord! You have created our body to be perfect IF we take good care of it. All sensations of discomfort and pain are symptoms that warn us that something is wrong. It can be physical, mental, emotional or spiritual. Teach us to identify the root of the problem. Guide us into the truth and apply it to our situation. We must partner You in the healing of our body, soul and spirit. Help us to co-operate with You and respond to You in obedience. Your sheep hear Your voice. Yes! We want to hear Your still small voice and receive healing. Heal us of our hurts, injuries and brokenness.
The Bible says: A broken and contrite heart O God, You will not despise. (Psalm 51:17b)
King David said, “Have mercy on me, O God, according to Your unfailing love; according to Your great compassion blot out my transgressions. Surely You desire truth in the inner parts; You teach me wisdom in the inmost place. Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me. Do not cast me from Your presence or take Your Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of Your salvation and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me. Then I will teach transgressors Your ways, and sinners will turn back to You.”
In repentance, David poured out his heart, emptying himself into the hands of Almighty God. We want to learn from him. He is a man after Your heart, O Almighty God!
We do not want the tension of the world to drive our life. We want life to come from You. In place of my restlessness, please give me Your REST.
