Quiet Time With Jesus – Choice

Friday, 8 February 2019

Man has the free will to make choices. We are not meant to be slaves (forced to work) or hired workers (employed to work). We are meant to be sons and daughters of our Creator. We bear His image. God created planet Earth for us to occupy and multiply. He said, “Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air and over EVERY living creature that moves on the ground.” (Genesis 1:28)

Then He said, “I give you EVERY seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole earth and EVERY tree that has fruit with seed in it. They will be yours for food. And to all the beasts of the earth and all the birds of the air and all the creatures that move on the ground – EVERYTHING that has the breath of life in it – I give EVERY green plant for food.” (Genesis 1:29-30)

Despite the abundance of food provided, man chose to eat the fruit that HE WAS TOLD not to eat. The consequences are disastrous.

Do you or have you done something that YOU WERE TOLD not to do?

Let’s look at Jesus. He did everything the Father told Him to do – EVERYTHING! The Bible tells us that God chose Him as our ransom. (1 Peter 1:20) And Jesus went willingly to the cross. Why? Nazareth was a cozy town. Why didn’t Jesus choose to build a business there, prosper and have a family of his own? Jesus was not forced to die. He chose to die on the cross – for us. Why?

Thinking about choices, I remember what my P6 teacher wrote in my autograph book: Choices are the hinges of destiny. I am still pondering over these words…

Whatever choices we make in life – good or bad, right or wrong – there are opportunities to re-choose so long as we are alive on earth. What we did not do in the past, we can choose to do now. If you hear Him say to you, “Follow me,” would you choose to follow Him? If not, why?

Jesus has chosen to love us. Let us ponder over His love… Does Jesus like every one of us – our habits, lifestyle, character, attitude, behaviour, ambitions… I don’t think so. But HE LOVES US.

There is a difference between liking and loving. We don’t have to like everyone but we are commanded to LOVE.

The Bible says: GOD IS LOVE. We are created in God’s image. We are created to love. We are able to love. Jesus is saying (to all who have ears to hear), “I have chosen you out of the world, so you don’t belong to it.” (John 15:19NCV)

My Prayer

Dear Father God, once again we come to Your Throne of Grace. Help us to understand why we don't belong to the world. Teach us to hear. Teach us to choose. Teach us to obey. Your way is the best way – the most excellent way! And You have said: Now I will show you the most excellent way. (1 Corinthians 12:31) In Jesus' name we pray. Amen!
