What is love?
I grew up among conservative people and I learned different words and actions that represent love. In English, there is only one word 'love' to represent all kinds of love eg a father's love, a husband's love, a friend's love and so on. When I was working in an office, I had a screen saver. The word 'Love' runs across my screen. One day, a colleague saw it and laughed at me. She must be thinking of one type of love that tickled her...
In a devotional are these words:
Psychologists and counsellors agree that one's observable actions of another person, not just his or her spoken or written words, provide the evidence that the person truly loves you.
So, if God is Spirit, how do we observe His actions and know that He loves us?
Read the Gospel (Matthew, Mark, Luke and John) and let God speak. Our heart must be receptive. From the start of his gospel, John reveals that Jesus is God Himself who became human like us, to live with us, in order to save us. God Himself came personally to live among us. He has a purpose. Only God Himself can save us. There is ONLY ONE WAY to save us. God has done His part. We have to do our part if we want to be saved eternally.
To offer one's self is the greatest gift anyone can give. God did exactly that. He gave Himself - His life - to show how much He loves us (John 15:13).
Yesterday I watched a HK music video. It moved me to tears. A man gave up everything to care for his wife. His wife either had dementia or Alzheimer's. It was not clear from the video. Her behaviour shows that she does not appreciate what he is doing for her. It is so heart-breaking... but he perseveres. Love enables him to selflessly give up his life for her whether she knows it or not.
Can we selflessly give up our lives for SOMEONE we love? LOVE will empower us to continue to DIE DAILY to those things that would draw us from Him. When we're truly in love with Jesus, our hearts become devoted to Him. It goes beyond gratitude. It is LOVE. We would want to spend every waking minute in His presence to become more like Him. God knows the deepest desire in our hearts - to live as He lives and love as He loves. Love calls us to CARRY OUR CROSS (a symbol of death) even as we learn to put to death anything in us that's not pleasing to God.
Dear Father God,
Your love is amazing. No words can fully describe how much You love us. It is not possible for us to respond to Your love adequately. But, we want to. We desire to. You know our desires. You know our hearts. Let us hear Your voice when You knock on the door of our hearts. We must open the door and let You in... Those whom You love, You rebuke and discipline. We will overcome! And You will give us the right to sit with You on Your throne, just as You overcame and sat down with the Father on His throne. We believe: You and the Father are one. If we abide in You, we will abound in You! Hallelujah!
The Bible says: the whole world is under the control of the evil one (1 John 5:19) BUT we are not afraid because we are children of God. The Bible tells us that the ONE WHO IS IN US is GREATER than the one who is in the world (1 John 4:4).
Therefore, give us discernment and understanding of Your Word. The Bible says: Paul's letters contain some things that are hard to understand, which ignorant and unstable people distort, as they do the other Scriptures, to their own destruction (2 Peter 3:16).
We want to be ON GUARD AT ALL TIMES. We want to GROW in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Amen!
