Lucifer was anointed and established by God. He was the seal of perfection, full of wisdom and perfect in beauty. He resided on God’s holy mountain until pride was found in him.
Paul was anointed and chosen by God. He accomplished many things but the longer he lived, the more he grew in humility. The longer he served the Lord, the smaller he viewed himself.
Paul called himself the “least of the apostles”, “less than the least of all the saints”, and “chief of sinners”.
After years of great accomplishments, his confession was not, “I have done it all, and my great ministry should be esteemed.” Paul understood that in Christ he was the righteousness of God (2 Corinthians 5:21). BUT, he never lost sight of God’s grace and mercy.
Andrew Murray: If I am something, then God is not everything; but when I become nothing, God can become all. The everlasting God in Christ can reveal Himself fully. This is the higher life. We need to become nothing … Oh, become nothing in deep reality, and, as a worker, study only one thing – to become poorer and lower and more helpless, so that Christ may work all in you.
No one who learns to rest on the living Christ can become slothful. The closer our contact with Christ, the more the Spirit of His zeal and love will be borne in us.
Dear Father God,
Pride goes before destruction and a haughty spirit before a fall. (Proverbs 16:18) Pride is rebellion against You. Keep us from entertaining pride. Help us to set our mind on things above – for our life is hidden with Christ in You. Help us to put off the old man and put on the new man who is renewed in knowledge according to Your image. Christ is all and in all. Help us to put on love, which is the bond of perfection. We seek perfection in Christ.
