Quiet Time with Jesus – Hear and Obey

Saturday, 8 August 2015

Do you talk to the Holy Spirit all the time?

When something was not done ‘my way’, my inner being got irritated and words immediately were ‘spoken silently’ (my thoughts).

We acquire habits when we keep doing the same thing. For example, when I got irritated, I responded in the same manner again and again, again and again … I became who I was.

It took me a long time before I could hear the still small voice clearly.

My way or His way

One time, I got irritated with a man … my inner being said, “His way is not your way” and I laughed … Then, I realized that my way is not His way. God has a sense of humor. Through this unforgettable encounter I changed my way of thinking.

The Sovereign LORD has given me an instructed tongue, to know the word that sustains the weary.
— Isaiah 50:4

How people talk tell us a lot about them.

Selwyn Hughes

Jesus’ speech is gentle (Isaiah 42:2) not barbed by a desire to promote Himself;

Jesus’ speech is incisive (Isaiah 49:2) not blunted by blandness or compromise;

Jesus’ speech is pure (Isaiah 53:7,9) not tainted by self-interest or self-defence;

God develops in His Son a disciplined tongue – “the Sovereign LORD has given me an instructed tongue” .

My Prayer

Dear Father God

Thank You that You have given me the Holy Spirit to be with me 24/7. He hears every word I say (spoken or silent). Sharpen my ears (physical and spiritual) so that I hear Him immediately and clearly.

I want to abide in You and Your word 24/7. I do not want to let any unwholesome talk come out of my mouth, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen (Ephesians 4:29).

Slowly but surely, You will discipline me to become more like You.

In Jesus’ wonderful name I pray.

Father, not my will but Yours be done. Amen.
