FAMILY LIFE CONFERENCE 2016

On a bright and cheery Saturday morning, about 40 parents arrived in school. Except, they weren’t here to study but had come to be refreshed and gain a whole new perspective of parenting. Laughter and chatter accompanied a hearty breakfast.

Following the breakfast was a time of worship led by Dr Robbie Goh.

We had the privilege of hearing from two speakers that day. First up, was Mrs Chaillan, the principal of ACS Junior. The crowd was soon laughing and nodding their heads in agreement, as she recounted several stories of her experience in bringing up her now teenage children. Mrs Chaillan gave tips on how parents can help their children enjoy school, putting emphasis on how each child is made differently by God and that we should learn to celebrate their children’s flairs.

“You need to know your child’s interests are first... By the end of the day, does the child have the interest and passion? If you don’t give your child time and space to imagine, your child will never find out.

She also reminded parents that children observe and follow their examples closely.

“You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise.

— Deuteronomy 6:7

Next up was Mrs Mervyln Goh, wife of Dr Robbie Goh and a teacher in ACS Independent, also captured the parents with her charm. Mrs Goh provided helpful information about the IB-program. Not forgetting the inspiring stories about how certain students overcame the obstacles life threw at them in order to achieve their dreams.

“So they will be called oaks of righteousness, the planting of the LORD, that He may be glorified.

— Isaiah 61:3

The session ended off with a time of Q&A. You could just imagine the amount of questions that the parents were anticipating to ask! The panel was made up of Dr Robbie Goh, Mrs Mervyln Goh, Mrs Chaillan and Mr Benjamin Choo (moderator). The panelists did a good job in reassuring parents by offering practical advice and tips.

We praise God for bestowing to us the joy of parenthood and for the enriching time we had!

“Behold, Children Are A Gift Of The Lord, The Fruit Of The Womb Is A Reward.” Psalm 127:3
