After the resurrection, the eleven DISCIPLES went to Galilee, to the mountain where Jesus had told them to go. When they saw Him, they worshipped Him; but some doubted. Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and MAKE DISCIPLES of all nations, BAPTIZING them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and TEACHING them to OBEY EVERYTHING I HAVE COMMANDED YOU. And surely I AM WITH YOU ALWAYS, to the VERY END of the age. (Matthew 28:16-20)
Are you a disciple of Jesus Christ?
Amongst other things, Jesus tells us to watch out for false prophets. They come to us in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ferocious wolves. By their fruit you will recognize them. Every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit. Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. Thus, by the fruit we will recognize them (Matthew 7:15-20). Likewise, by our fruit, people will recognize whether we are true disciples of Christ or not.
Apostle Paul tells us that there are different kinds of spiritual gifts, but the same Spirit. When the disciples compete among themselves, Paul tells them to DESIRE THE GREATER GIFTS. Just like Jesus tells His disciples that they will do greater things, Paul tells us to desire greater gifts. So, what does ‘greater’ mean? I remember how Jesus resolves the dispute among His disciples when they compete to be the greatest in the kingdom…
Jesus called a little child to Him and said, “Truly I tell you, UNLESS YOU CHANGE and become like little children, YOU WILL NEVER ENTER THE KINGDOM OF HEAVEN. Therefore, whoever takes the lowly position of this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven."
The danger of competition resulting in accomplishment is pride. The Bible tells us that Lucifer was the model of perfection, full of wisdom and perfect in beauty (Ezekiel 28:12). He was anointed as a guardian cherub. He was blameless in his ways from the day God created him until wickedness was found in him. Through Lucifer’s widespread trade, he was filled with violence, and he sinned… HIS HEART BECAME PROUD on account of his beauty, and he corrupted his wisdom because of his splendour. Therefore, above all else, we must GUARD OUR HEART, for everything we do flows from it.
Apostle Paul says that the most excellent way to exercise our spiritual gifts is love. Spiritual gifts are given to us by the Holy Spirit to bless others, not ourselves and we use them in love. Without love, we are nothing (1 Corinthians 13:2).
Dear Father God
In the name of Jesus, I pray that our love may abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight, so that we may be able to discern what is best and pure and blameless until the day of Christ, filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ.
Fill us with the Holy Spirit so that we may live by the Spirit and not gratify the desires of the sinful nature. The more we spend time with You, the more we will reflect the fruit of the Spirit which is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Jesus has said, “Ask and it will be given to us; Seek and we will find; Knock and the door will be opened to us.” Thank You Father God that You hear our prayer. And may the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with us all.
