My children are adults now but I still watch over them (at a distance) so that I know when they are getting into trouble… I watch from a distance so that they may learn how to deal with their own problems / challenges. I will step in only if they invite me in. I trust that they are able to take care of themselves and handle difficulties (including people) themselves.
As I reflect on how we should raise our kids, I am reminded that God our Father also watches over us – at a distance. He doesn’t dominate or manipulate. He is not a dictator or a tyrant. I have learned what it means to FEAR GOD…
After years of reminding myself that God is watching, I have learned to be aware of His loving presence in my daily life. He is present because He cares. He is always ready to help, guide and teach us - if we ask Him. If we do something wrong, our spirit man will caution us… Some people call it ‘conscience’. We should conscientiously obey God’s commands because we want to, not because we have to. It is not sin-consciousness. It is God-consciousness. It is not being ‘legalistic’ – it is not about things you can do or cannot do. It is about things that you want to do and things you do not want to do – because you love God.
It took me some time to understand what ‘Fear-of-the-Lord’ means. It is not being scared or terrified of God’s punishment. The fear-of-the-Lord is driven by love:
1) His love for us – how much He loved us that He gave His life, died on the cross, shed His blood to wash away our sins, so that we may become clean and live again as His child.
2) Our love for Him – that we do not want to hurt Him. Yes, God can be hurt. He grieves when we sin.
I remember a testimony by a pastor: He was caught stealing. His mother was ‘ferociously’ chasing him with a cane… He ran ‘for his life’ only aware of the painful punishment… But, when he turned and saw his mother’s face… He saw LOVE – she was crying… From that time on, he stopped stealing. What a powerful testimony!
I believe God is at work during every teachable moment of my life. I have learned to turn to Him - in all circumstance, at all times - knowing that He is present and watching over me. The psalm that touched me when I felt helpless in 2001 was Psalm 121 – 5 times the psalmist tells me that God Himself is watching over me (NIV) – verses 3, 4, 5, 7 and 8. What more do I want?
Thank You God that You have a plan for me even when I don’t know You. I believe You have a plan for every person that You have created on this earth. You are the LORD, the Maker of heaven and earth. Your love is everlasting. Your Word is Truth. Your love never fails. Help us to know You and Your love. Help us to respond to You and love You in return. Apostle John says: We love because He first loved us (1 John 4:19). How true! Help us Father God, to know this wonderful love that You have for us. Bless us with this knowledge so that we may bless others.
In Jesus’ wonderful name I pray.
