Quiet Time With Jesus – Life in the Flesh or Life in the Spirit?

Wednesday, 22 August 2018

Today is my 65th birthday. I thank God for everything that He has done for me. God provides for all my needs. He watches over me every minute, every second. The LORD is my light and my salvation. His Word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path. I know His presence is with me wherever I go. He preserves my life.

We have about 70 or 80 precious years of life in the flesh on earth. By the grace of God, for us who believe and receive Jesus Christ as Lord of our lives, we have received the free gift of eternal life. Knowing that life in the flesh is short, we must make full use of it. I am not talking about enjoying life in the flesh but I am talking about life in the spirit. The Holy Spirit is given to us (each and every one) to help us walk in the spirit i.e. in line with God’s plan and purposes for us. God’s plan is redemptive. He wants every single person on earth to repent and return to Him. Is it possible?

Yes, with God, all things are possible - it cannot be accomplished through human effort. It can only be accomplished through the power of the Holy Spirit, the will of God and the surrender of the human heart.

Let us continually self-examine our inner being and be willing to make changes from within. Let us cooperate with the Holy Spirit who is living in us. Let us discover what we can do well and do it for the glory of God. Let us not waste any more time. Let us persevere in what we believe is right and stand firm in Christ. Let us do everything without complaining or arguing. Let us set our hearts and minds on things above, not on earthly things.

Apostle Paul said that we have ‘died’ – our old self has died - and our life is now hidden with Christ in God. It is only WITH CHRIST that we can be HIDDEN IN GOD. Can you imagine being hidden in God? I cannot. It’s too awesome for me to fathom but I have decided to listen to the still small voice speaking to me, guiding me every step of the way. He is my internal compass for life.

Blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked or stand in the way of sinners or sit in the seat of mockers. But his delight is in the law of the LORD, and on his law he meditates day and night. He is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither. Whatever he does prospers.
— Psalm 1:1-3

A pastor frequently encourages his congregation to be God-conscious and not sin-conscious. I was brought up in a traditionally strict environment. Therefore, I was brought up living with sin-consciousness. When I do something wrong, I expect punishment. When I am not caught, I suffer from self-condemnation. It has taken me a long time to understand that God has forgiven me no matter what. God doesn’t want us to live in self-condemnation. He wants us to be conscious of Him - living in us through the Holy Spirit and His Word.

Our Father God has already taken care of ALL our sins. He sent His Son Jesus Christ to die for ALL our sins - past, present and future. He has given us His word that if we confess our sins, He is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.

How does God purify us from all unrighteousness? It is possible only through the power of the Holy Spirit and the purity of His Word.

For those of us who are unable to forgive ourselves (myself included), Apostle Paul says that there is now no condemnation for those who are IN CHRIST JESUS, because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit of life sets us free from the law of sin and death. Although I do not fully understand (100%) how it works, I choose to TRUST GOD IN HIS WORD, believe and FOLLOW JESUS in all His ways.

God has promised that He will be with us when we pass through the waters. When we pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over us. When we walk through the fire, we will not be burned. The flames of the enemy will not set us ablaze because God is with us. However, let us be mindful that God is also a consuming fire. Let us allow the fire of God to refine us. The song ‘Refiner’s Fire’ comes to mind…

The Bible says that the LORD confides in those who fear Him; He makes His covenant known to them (Psalm 25:14). Therefore, one thing that I ask of the LORD – the one thing that I seek – is that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to gaze upon the beauty of the LORD and to seek Him in His temple.

Truly, truly the LORD sits enthroned over the flood; the LORD is enthroned as King forever. The LORD gives strength to His people; the LORD blesses His people with peace (Psalm 29:10-11).

Amen
