C. S. Lewis: The prayer preceding all prayers is “May it be the real I who speaks. May it be the real Thou that I speak to.”
Who am I? Who is God?
Philip Yancey: Prayer invites me to lower defences and present the self that no other person fully knows to a God who already knows.
When my daughter shares her feelings and desires, it draws us closer to each other. When she was much younger, I can give her what she desires but not anymore. Only God can give what is best for her. Nevertheless, conversation is the channel through which God reveals His presence and love.
Little children are usually determined to ‘do things themselves’ and adults would encourage them to do so because we want them to be able to take care of themselves. God wants us to be able to take care of ourselves too but like parents [and caregivers], He is always near us, watching and making sure that we do not get hurt. God is love. If the little ones do not listen to instructions, they may get hurt. Likewise, if we [adults] do not listen and obey His instructions, we may also get hurt. The truth is: We are not self-reliant. We must first listen and learn before we can do anything. We must remember and repeat, practice and persevere before we can master any skill. Sometimes we do dangerous things and we need God’s protection. Let us not take Him for granted. Let us not be too proud to pray. Indeed, prayer enables me to see my true state.
Henri Nouwen: To pray is to walk in the full light of God, and to say simply, without holding back, ‘I am human and You are God.’ At that moment, conversion occurs, the restoration of the true relationship. A human being is not someone who once in a while makes a mistake, and God is not someone who now and then forgives. No, human beings are sinners and God is love.”
Dear Father God,
THANK YOU for speaking to us through Your servants (authors who are filled with the Holy Spirit). I feel so inadequate when I read their thoughts and feelings that I am struggling to find the right words to pray. But Father, You are God. You already know everything including the true condition of my heart. Nothing can be hidden from You.
IN YOUR PRESENCE, I get a glimpse of my true state in the universe, which exposes my smallness at the same time it reveals Your greatness. Truly, I am just a speck of dust and yet You know me and You love me. Thank You Lord!
Apostle Paul prayed “that you, being rooted and established in love, may have power, together with all the saints, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ.”
Father God, I want to be rooted in the love of Christ. I want to live my life in Christ. Amen!
