Death is the true essence of the Christian life. We must die first, then we can live again. The old self dies and the new self comes to life (John 3:3-7). I am not referring to physical death.
Do you treasure what is physical (temporal) more than what is spiritual (eternal)?
In Christianity, dying (to self) is both a one-time event and a lifelong process.
Jesus said to His disciples:
And in John 3:3, Jesus declared: “I tell you the truth, no one can see the kingdom of God unless he is born again.”
The rite of baptism expresses the commitment of the believer to die to the old, sinful way of life (Romans 6:4-8) and be reborn to a new life in Christ. I shudder whenever the Holy Spirit reminds me of my commitment. But, I am also reminded and assured that God will continue to love me/all believers and use me/us after my/our time of backsliding.
Apostle Paul: No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And GOD IS FAITHFUL; He will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, He will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it. (1 Corinthians 10:13)
Apostle John: God is light; in Him there is no darkness at all... If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. IF WE CONFESS our sins, HE IS FAITHFUL AND JUST and WILL FORGIVE us our sins and PURIFY us from all unrighteousness. (1 John 1:5-9)
As the Holy Spirit guides us, we must respond by letting go of the things of the old life, especially the sinful ways and lifestyles we once engaged in. Where we once pursued selfish pleasures, we must now pursue WITH EQUAL PASSION, the lifestyle that pleases God.
Dear Father God
I confess that many of us are living partly in the old life and partly in the new. We are the ones Jesus will spit out (Revelation 3:15-16). Forgive us Lord. Thank You that You will purify us from all unrighteousness. Thank You that You will continue to guide us in right living with Christ. In Him, we can overcome all temptations. In Him, we shall live and move and have our being (Acts 17:28).
In Jesus' name I pray.
