Quiet Time with Jesus – Be Great

Thursday, 4 January 2018

Jesus said,

“You know that those who are regarded as rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their high officials exercise authority over them. Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be slave of all. For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”
— Mark 10:42-45

Why do you want to be great? What must we do to be great in God’s eyes?

Jesus said that the greatest in the kingdom of heaven are the servants of all. Servants quietly obey all that their masters have called them to do. A friend once pointed out the stark difference between two cleaners at a food court. One was cleaning tables with great joy and the other was doing her work grudgingly. Jesus calls us to love and to serve all people, even our enemies,

“But I tell you: Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you”
— Matthew 5:44

What an amazing command!

Someone said, “Serving others on a daily basis does not make us great in this world. Yet our obedience to God revealed through our faithful love and service to Him and to others – even in the little things – is what God notices and celebrates (Luke 16:10).

My Prayer

Dear Father God

It is great to be great in Your eyes. Hide us in Christ to do the things He calls us to do so that His name may be magnified. Like what John the Baptist said, “He [Jesus] must become greater; I must become less” (John 3:30) let us do likewise. Amen!
