A loved one said to me once, “You Christians have no principles!!!” She was very angry because I was still in contact with someone who did something unforgivable. I could feel her deep sense of hurt but I could only utter, “I’m sorry.”
As I seek the Lord for peace of mind, verse after verse came to mind:
1) If you forgive men when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive men their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins (Matthew 6:14-15).
Principle is ‘moral rule; settled reason of action; uprightness’
2) When you stand praying, if you hold anything against anyone, forgive him, so that your Father in heaven may forgive you your sins (Mark 11:25).
3) Forgive us our sins, for we also forgive everyone who sins against us and lead us not into temptation (Luke 11:4).
In essence, Christians are being warned: when we refuse to forgive someone, we are turning away from God who is love. God loves and forgives. God is also holy and just. He is the Judge - the Only Judge. God has said, “It is Mine to avenge” (Deuteronomy 32:35). There is only one Lawgiver and Judge, the One who is able to save and destroy (James 4:12).
We must seek God’s grace to help us resist all temptations to sin as a result of unforgiveness and bitterness. Apostle Paul said, “… DO NOT GRIEVE THE HOLY SPIRIT OF GOD, with whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice. Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, JUST AS IN CHRIST, GOD FORGAVE YOU (Ephesians 4).
The Holy Spirit will help us repair and restore broken relationships, whether we are offended or someone has offended us. Spiritual warfare is real. Our enemy pounces on us when we are weak. Therefore, we need to be alert and exercise self-control, and not allow the devil to tempt us into doing something that grieves the Holy Spirit. God promises us victory over the evil one if we obey His Word and walk in the Spirit at all times.
Christians should neither compromise our values nor condone sins. We are simply allowing God to be God - by releasing to Him our pain, emotional hurts and anger. We are the redeemed of the Lord. We can let go and let God take over.
Dear Father God,
We love You and we obey You. We promise to clothe ourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. We promise to bear with each other and forgive whatever grievances we may have against one another. We promise to forgive as You forgave us. We promise to put on love.
We pray and ask for the peace of Christ to rule in our hearts. We promise to let the Word of Christ dwell in us richly and whatever we do, whether in word or deed, we promise to do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus.
We thank You Father God that You hear us. We know that You will enable us to do everything according to Your Will. Truly, truly, by Jesus’ wounds, we are healed! Amen!
