Quiet Time With Jesus – Fasting and Seeking God

Wednesday, 8 August 2018

The Bible does not give much information on how we should fast. We only read about how long some Bible characters fast and the reason why they fast.

I don't fast without seeking God. (We should seek God at all times, whether we are fasting or not.)

Below is an excerpt from our 40-day 2010 prayer guide.

We are free to fast however the Spirit leads us. Here are some options:

Total Fast – abstain from solid food and beverages for 24 hours. Take only water.

Partial Fast – abstain from solid food for an extended part of the day. Take only water. We may fast from sunrise to sundown or from breakfast to afternoon tea.

1 Meal Fast – sacrifice one full meal a day.

Beverage Fast – abstain from solid food for 24 hours. Take only water and liquid food such as milk, milo or other health beverages.

Daniel Fast – abstain from meats and other favorite delicacies. Take only small portions of fresh vegetables, fruit and juices. We may practice this as a 40-day routine. Or make it a 10-day fast [Daniel 1:12].

Esther Fast – abstain from solid food for 24 hours for 3 days. [Esther 4:16]

God is not playing a game of hide-and-seek with us. He is waiting for us to find Him but we must SEEK HIM WITH ALL OUR HEART.

Jesus will answer all our questions but He often speaks in parables. He wants us to think deeper and find His perfect answers to our questions. Jesus does not spoon-feed His disciples. Neither does He force-feed them.

Sometimes when we ask one another whether we can or cannot do something, I have a standard answer – Ask Jesus.

My Prayer

Dear Father God,

I lift up my eyes to the hills – where does my help come from? My help comes from the LORD, the Maker of heaven and earth (Psalm 121:1-2).

Father God, You are the Maker of heaven and earth. Yes! I look to You for help. Although I cannot see You, I know You are always with me. You never fall asleep. You are my shade in the day. You are my shelter in the night. The sun and the moon cannot harm me because You keep me from all harm. Amen!

You are watching over my life. You are watching over my coming and going both now and forevermore. Thank You Father God!

I am not afraid for You have redeemed me. You have summoned me by name; I am Yours. When I pass through the waters, You will be with me; and when I pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over me. When I walk through the fire, I will not be burned; the flames will not set me ablaze.

You are the LORD, my God, the Holy One of Israel, my Savior. I am not afraid because You are always with me.

All my children will be taught by You, and great will be their peace.
