Quiet Time With Jesus – Buying Hope

Thursday, 19 July 2018

Have you ever been tempted to buy a lottery ticket? Someone once told me that he is ‘buying hope’.

Many people hope to win some money because they have a financial problem. Just imagine the devil whispering these words, “You don’t want to give up hope, do you?”

I have been tempted too. The devil suggested that I give all the money that I win to the poor. “That’s a great idea!” I had thought. He continued to suggest, “Or, you can give 90% to the poor…” These suggestions sounded good but they are subtly going one direction! Being deceived, I bought a ticket. The winning numbers of that draw were very far from the numbers on my ticket. So, I stopped buying because I felt that the chance of winning is very slim.  After some time, the devil tempted me again. I bought another ticket. This time, several numbers were one digit away from the winning numbers. “Hey! That’s close. That means it is possible to win,” I thought. Suddenly, the Holy Spirit convicted me, “You are being tempted.” Then, I saw Jesus in the desert. After fasting forty days and forty nights, He was hungry. The tempter came to Him and said, “If You are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread.” Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’”

Why doesn’t Jesus turn the stones into bread?

One morning, a stranger spoke to me, “Work is very hard. I have lost all my wages on gambling…” I was so taken aback that I didn’t know what to say except, “Please don’t gamble.”

The Bible says -

Cast all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you. Be self-controlled and alert. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because you know that your brothers throughout the world are undergoing the same kind of sufferings.
— 1 Peter 5:7-9

Oswald Chambers: The level of my growth in grace is revealed by the way I look at obedience. We should have a much higher view of the word ‘obedience’, rescuing it from the mire of the world. Obedience is only possible between people who are equals in their relationship to each other; like the relationship between father and son, not that between master and servant.”

If a person rules another by saying, “You must do this,” and “You will do that,” he breaks the human spirit, making it unfit for God. A person is simply a slave for obeying, unless behind his obedience is the RECOGNITION OF A HOLY GOD. Unquote.

The purity of His Light shines into my heart and my mind. I want to continually align my will to God’s will. Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.

Amen!
