Quiet Time With Jesus – Silent Retreat

Wednesday, 18 July 2018

I had a short period of illness recently and was forced to retreat (almost in silence) seeking God and hearing Him. It happened so suddenly that I am not able to remember all the details of my visits to the GP and the A & E department of our Singapore General Hospital. I was so blessed with kind doctors, nurses and medical staff that the hospitalisation was like a vacation.

During this unplanned retreat, I encountered God’s presence and peace. I even had a vision of my guardian angel and a warring angel (clothed in full armour with his sword raised). The latter angel had pulled down his helmet, raised his sword and shouted “Charge!” This vision reminds me of Ephesians 6:17 – Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.

Actually in two weeks time, I was supposed to go on a mission trip to preach the Gospel. I was unable to attend the last two sessions of training due to my sickness. I prayed and asked God whether He has something else for me to do.

I noticed that it had not rained on all the days of my stay in the hospital so I asked for rain. On Sunday, I prayed. On Monday, I heard the rain. It was a short shower. On Tuesday, it drizzled for two hours. On Thursday, there was typhoon in the country where I was supposed to go. On Sunday, it rained for four hours from 5 to 9am. I had asked God for rain to confirm that I don't have to go. His answer was clear but I was not satisfied. As I continued to seek the Lord, I began to understand what He wants me to do. Step by step, I responded to every prompting of the Holy Spirit.

Prayer is essential for every assignment received from God. It is true that God will provide and protect us when we obediently respond to His calling to do something but it is also true that we stay connected with Him in prayer, praise and practice.

Ephesians 6:18 says

“And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always KEEP ON PRAYING FOR ALL THE SAINTS.”

Our God’s command is: To keep on praying - not for ourselves but for ALL THE SAINTS – i.e. the BODY OF CHRIST, which is not just our church but for the CHURCH OF JESUS CHRIST.

Jesus prays for all believers:

My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message, that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that You have sent Me.
— John 17:20-21

My Prayer

Dear Father God,

The only thing that I desire is: To know You and to make You known. As You give gifts to each and every saint, may we responsibly use all that You have given us to accomplish all that You want us to accomplish. Your ways are perfect and we want to follow after You. Thank You Lord!
