Quiet Time With Jesus - Fasting

Friday, 4 May 2018

I was reflecting on what a speaker shared about fasting. The key is: What does God tell you? In his prayer for us, he said, “Lord, let your people know how to fast, what to fast, when and how long to fast…”

I opened my Bible and turned to the book of Isaiah. I know there is a chapter on ‘True Fasting” – Isaiah 58.

These are my thoughts:

People need to hear. [Hear what?] People need to hear about their sin of rebellion. God’s people did fast but their hearts were not right with God. Their hearts were wicked.

What is the attitude of your heart when you fast?

God’s people had continued to live in their own wicked ways e.g. exploiting their employees, quarrelling with one another, striving for personal benefits…

Isaiah said, “You cannot fast as you do today and expect your voice to be heard on high.”

This is the kind of fasting the LORD has chosen: loose the chains of injustice; untie the cords of the yoke; set the oppressed free; break every yoke; share your food with the hungry; provide the poor wanderer with shelter; and when you see the naked, clothe him. Do not turn away from your own flesh and blood (Isaiah 58:6-7).

The LORD said that IF you do away with… and IF you spend yourselves… THEN your light will rise in the darkness, and your night will become like the noonday. I do not want to offend any brother or sister-in-Christ but the truth is: NOT every Christian has the light. That is why people do not see Christ in some of us.

When we fast [not if we fast, but when we fast] we must LISTEN to God’s voice. What is He saying to us? The LORD will always guide us: How to fast; What to fast; When and How long to fast. It is our own will to humble ourselves. What is the attitude of our heart [of flesh] when we fast? What are we fasting for? God desires honesty. He hates hypocrisy.

My Prayer of Thanksgiving

Dear Father God,

I have not been able to fast until 2016. Father God, You spoke through a sister-in-Christ who encouraged us to fast. Thereafter, I decided to continue fasting. About 5 months later, something happened.

My husband was diagnosed with a critical illness on 15 July 2016. Had I not fasted, life would have been worse. Upon hindsight, I could see Your Hand of protection, provision, healing and restoration. My spirit had quickened during those days of uncertainty and anxiety. Your presence was so real that I really really cannot find the words to describe it. You are our Good Good Father!

Truly, our lives are in God’s hands. He knows the end from the beginning. There is no need to strive but there is a need to take up our cross. There is a need to desire God in our lives. There is a need to obey His commands. There is a need for self-discipline, determination and self-control. God gives strength to the weak. He guides us when we ask Him. He is our Good Good Father. He is ready and willing to give us whatever we ask in Jesus’ name. This is His command: Love One Another.
