Quiet Time with Jesus – REST

Monday, 16 April 2018

At 313 Somerset Food Republic (food court), my friends and I chatted with a lady who worked there as a cleaner (clearing tables). She walks with some difficulty. Last Saturday, she told us that she is 90 years old! We were amazed. All of us agreed that she must continue working (i.e. be physically and mentally active). "She must not rest from work," I continued thinking about her and her work.

Have you ever thought about God’s rest?

By the seventh day God had FINISHED the work he had been doing; so on the seventh day HE RESTED from all His work.
— Genesis 2:2

Did God take a break for the same reason that we take a holiday? Was God tired?

Psalm 121:4 tells us that God never slumbers or sleeps. Obviously, God is never tired.

God rested because HIS WORK of creation was FULLY DONE. God rested because His work was accomplished.
— Peter Chin

Jesus said,

Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.
— Matthew 11:28

When I was working (in banking as well as teaching), work is never “completed”. One project after another needs attention, one event after another... The same applies to church activities too! When someone recovers from a critical illness, he or she would (sometimes) say, “My work on earth is not completed yet.”

I have learned to rest. Before an activity, I would think through the details. God has trained me (through my work experiences). When I was a younger Christian, I tend to FRET over ‘problems’ e.g. not enough helpers. But nowadays, I would think of Hudson Taylor Quotes e.g.

“God’s work done in God’s way will never lack God’s provision.”

“I have found that there are three stages in every great work of God: first, it is impossible, then it is difficult, then it is done.”

“Let us never forget that what we are is more important than what we do.”

I must confess that I only really learned to rest on God when my husband was diagnosed with cancer. It was an unforgettable period when God revealed Himself to me – His love, His protection, His provision… God was and He still is - so so near!

My Prayer

Dear Father God,

I pray for all my brothers and sisters-in-Christ: that they learn to REST in You. Life is active. We must not stop working until You tell us to. We must not overload ourselves with work because it is NOT the work that You look at. You look into our hearts.

We might not be working hard for 30 days, 30 weeks, 30 months, or 30 years but we might just stop for 30 minutes to comfort someone who is in desperate need of God’s love. Our work in the Lord is NOT measured the same way as the world measures a person’s performance.

I am no longer disturbed when I see empty seats in church because I know that my brothers and sisters-in-Christ are usually somewhere ministering and sharing the Gospel.

A sister-in-Christ commented once: A strong church is a sending church.

God sends His people out on His assignments. Praise God!
