Quiet Time with Jesus - Idolatry

What is idolatry? What does the Word of God say about idolatry?

Paul said,

Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry. Because of these, the wrath of God is coming
— Colossians 3:7

Some people think that God is love and grace but they forget that God is also pure and holy. God cannot tolerate sin.

Paul continued to say,

You USED TO walk in these ways, in the life you once lived. But now you must rid yourselves of ALL such things as these: anger, rage, malice, slander and filthy language from your lips
— Colossians 3:8

My Prayer

Dear Father God,

THANK YOU for Your Word. It is the anchor for our ‘Life-in-Christ’. Let us not forget the Cross of Calvary where Jesus Christ sacrificed Himself as the Perfect Lamb of God. Since that day, we can be set free from sin and live again in Christ. Hallelujah!

HELP US to remember to put on our new self, which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of our Creator. Help us to be alert and pay attention to the still small voice. Help us to yield to the Spirit of Truth as He guides us in this renewal process.

Paul also said that there was no Greek or Jew, circumcised or uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave or free, but CHRIST IS ALL, and IS IN ALL. How wonderful! How marvelous!

REMIND US not to compare, criticize or condemn ethnic differences, culture or past mistakes. Remind us that Christ is in all and we are all new creations in Your eyes. Remind us to help one another turn over a new leaf. It is only possible if we love one another the way You loved us.

MAKE US AWARE that You have given us different roles to play. Make us aware that we are different in our gifting and talents. Make us aware that someone is always better than us. Make us aware of his [her] role and cheer him [her] on.

In Jesus' name I pray.

So... What is idolatry?

My answer [for now] is: Idolatry is anything and everything that takes us away from God. Let us re-examine the desires of our heart.
