Quiet Time with Jesus – We get to choose

Monday, 8 May 2017

When I was younger, I encountered a super rude food seller. I was so angry with his behavior that I boycotted his food stall for a long time. When I grew older, I still encounter rude food sellers but my response has changed. Instead of being angry, I was amused. I began to observe them, chat with them, get to know them… Everyone has a story. How we respond or react to daily encounters is our personal choice. We get to choose.

Someone sent me a riddle:

A rich man needs _______. A poor man has _______. If you eat _______ you die and when you die you can take _______ with you.

One word fits all 4 blank spaces! It is a seven-letter word. What is it? This is a Hong Kong Primary 1 entry test question.

Paul told Timothy:

Therefore I exhort first of all that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving thanks be made for ALL MEN, for kings and ALL who are in authority, that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in ALL godliness and reverence. For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior, who DESIRES ALL MEN TO BE SAVED and to COME TO THE KNOWLEDGE OF THE TRUTH.
— 1 Timothy 2:1-4

I pondered over this instruction. How can I PRAY FOR ALL MEN? How can I pray for ‘bad’ people…

As I listened to real life stories, I began to understand. Everyone gets to choose. We get to choose whether to forgive or not to forgive. Forgiveness is powerful. It has the power to break chains. Forgiveness sets us free.

Jesus said,

For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.
— Matthew 6:14-15

My Prayer

Dear Father God,

From Day 1, You allowed man to choose. Adam and Eve had chosen. Their choice of action had consequences. All consequences are in accordance with Your set of Principles.

Your Word says:

Blessed are the undefiled in the way, who walk in the law of the LORD! Blessed are those who keep His testimonies, who seek Him with the whole heart! They also do no iniquity; They walk in His ways. You have commanded us to keep Your precepts diligently. Oh, that my ways were directed to keep Your statutes! Then I would not be ashamed, when I look into all Your commandments. I will praise You with uprightness of heart, when I learn Your righteous judgments. I will keep Your statutes; Oh, do not forsake me utterly!
— Psalm 119:1-8

Father God, You are rich in mercy. You give us opportunities again and again to repent of our wrongdoings and foolishness. When we do so, You forgive us.

Father God, I pray for ALL MEN (women and children) that they may be saved and come to the knowledge of the TRUTH.

I also pray for everyone who is born again as a CHILD OF GOD to be empowered to forgive because we ourselves are forgiven, saved by grace, through faith. Each and every child of God is a new creation and an heir of eternal life. We are being led by the Spirit. We are redeemed from the curse of the Law.

I pray for every child of God to be filled with the Spirit, strong in the Lord and in His mighty power. We are heirs of God and co-heir with Christ. We are blessed with every spiritual blessing. We are imitators of God. We are the light of the world. Healed by His wounds, we are being transformed by the renewing of our minds. We are heirs to the blessings of Abraham. Every child of God is more than a conqueror, able to do all things through Christ who strengthens us.

Amen and Amen!

Hallelujah! PRAISE THE LORD!
