Quiet Time with Jesus – Discern

Wednesday, 10 May 2017

It is easy to be kind. My ex-boss advised me not to keep lending money to a colleague who was perpetually in debt… That advice started me thinking about the virtue of kindness. I can still remember her words, “Sometimes, you have to be unkind to be kind.”

As a follower of Christ, I think the most important thing to do is to discern.

Oswald Chambers (OC): If you become a necessity to someone else’s life, you are out of God’s will… Over and over again, we try to be amateur providences in someone’s life. We are indeed amateurs, coming in and actually preventing God’s will and saying, “This person should not have to experience this difficulty.”

The truth is: our sympathy (sometimes) gets in the way.

My Pray

Dear Father God,

I see Jesus walking in Your Will, never doing anything out of Your Will. We want to do likewise. I pray in the powerful name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Teacher, that we may listen intently with our entire beings until we hear Your voice in the life of another person.

We do not want to rejoice with someone over the wrong thing, but always look to rejoice over the right thing. Like John the Baptist, we say,

He who has the bride is the bridegroom; but the friend of the bridegroom, who stands and hears him, rejoices greatly because of the bridegroom’s voice. Therefore, this joy of mine is fulfilled. HE MUST INCREASE, BUT I MUST DECREASE.
