Quiet Time with Jesus – Do not confuse God and man

Wednesday, 23 March 2016

Eli was the priest in charge of the tabernacle at Shiloh. But, Eli’s sons were wicked men – they had no regard for the LORD. Why would God entrust Samuel to a man who had two wicked sons?

Someone observed that Eli demonstrated God’s willingness to re-commission us. No matter how badly we have messed up in the past, God can still use us. Possibly Samuel chose to learn from the negative example of Hophni and Phinehas (Eli’s two sons). Most certainly he learned from his mother’s respect for God and her commitment to obedience.

Beth Moore: We cannot use even the worst of our leaders’ failures as excuses before God for lives of negligence and compromise.

1 Samuel 3:1 says that “the word of the LORD was rare” in their days – they did not hear from God because they did not honour God. God did not speak because they did not listen. Yet despite the example of Eli’s sons, Samuel CHOSE a life of unparalleled faithfulness to God. Samuel did not confuse God and man.

This is an amazing lesson for me. I must say I often confuse God and man. From now on, my desire is to SEE GOD in every situation and every circumstance; SEEK GOD and LISTEN to His voice, YIELD to His Spirit, DISCERN the truth through His Word, and WALK in obedience to the LORD.

Hannah fulfilled her vow to the LORD. She meant what she said when she prayed. She was faithful and obedient. That is what I long to be – faithful and obedient to the LORD.

What made Hannah do what she did? She could have said to the LORD, “Look at Eli’s sons. I’m sure You do not want me to entrust my son to such a man, right?” – a perfect excuse not to give her son to the LORD. Another voice might have said, “Look at Eli’s sons. ARE YOU SURE God wants you to entrust your son to such a man?” Hannah knew what the LORD wants her to do. And she obeyed the LORD. Hannah did not confuse God and man.

Richard J. Foster: We make mistakes, we sin, we fall down, but each time we get up and begin again. We pray again. WeSEEK TO FOLLOW GOD again … We confess and begin again … and again … and again.

LYL: God gave Eli another chance at fathering.

The psalmist says,

Our steps are made firm by the Lord, when He delights in our way; though we stumble, we shall not fall headlong, for the Lord holds us by the hand.
— Psalm 37:23-24 NRSV

LYL: What a beautiful picture! God holds us by the hand! Amen!
