Patience in Greek: hupomeno – endurance, staying power, hang-in-there power;
Rick Renner: Patience is one of the major weapons you need to outlast any difficulty or time of stress and pressure that comes your way. So if you’re going through some rough circumstances at the moment, be encouraged! It’s a fleeting and temporary condition that will soon change! It’s time for you to get your eyes off your challenges and to stop fixating on your problems. Make up your mind that you’re going to stand your ground and hang in there. It won’t be long until the problems flee – and when they do, you’ll be so glad you didn’t give up! Unquote
As a Christian, I know that I must WAIT on God for specific direction. But, how does it work?
How many decisions do I make on my own, and how many do I make only after I’ve waited for the Lord’s direction?
Someone shared this analogy: God’s Word and the wisdom He gives me are like guardrails on a highway. They keep me heading in the right direction, prevent me from going in the ditch, and put me in company with others who are on the same journey. But guardrails don’t tell you when to stop and help a stranded motorist!
The Holy Spirit is our guide within those guardrails, and we need to be LISTENING for His counsel and His warnings ALL ALONG THE WAY. That’s why Scripture tells us to “keep in step with the Spirit” (Galatians 5:25).
Our relationship with God is a partnership. In His love, He will keep us moving in the best direction.
Jesus said: The Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will TEACH you all things and will REMINDyou of everything I have said to you.
Jesus also said: When he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will GUIDE you into all truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will TELL you what is yet to come.
Paul said: The Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groans that words cannot express. And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints in accordance with God’s will. And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.
Paul also said: The fruit [characteristics] of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.
Dear Father God
As I reflect on the role and characteristics of the Holy Spirit, I see You!
Sometimes, when I ask You for advice, You said, “Why ask Me? You have already decided.”
Father, You are forever so patient with me. You search my heart … You know me inside out. You know when I am merely asking for Your support of a decision that I have already made myself. I have deceived myself into thinking that every decision I made was a decision after seeking You.
I have often run ahead of You … especially when I’m energized by Your favor and good gifts. Like a clock-work mouse, I run around … run and run … and then stall! O how foolish I was!
The Bible reveals that Moses consulted the LORD every step of the way. He told the Israelites,
We must not develop a habit of asking questions continuously but not LISTENING patiently.
If we listen patiently and carefully to what You are saying … telling us what to do, when to do and how to do, we would not run around - knocking things down, picking them up, and wasting our God-given energy …
Song: Hide me now, under Your wings; Cover me, within Your mighty hand; When the oceans rise and thunders roar; I will soar with You, above the storm; Father, You are King over the flood; I will be still, know You are God;
Find rest my soul, in Christ alone; Know His power, in quietness and trust; When the oceans rise and thunders roar; I will soar with You, above the storm; Father, You are King over the flood; I will be still, know You are God (Still)
Every morning at about 6:30am, I begin my daily exercises at Tiong Bahru Park. At around 7:15am, I sing as I swing … into His presence, entering into His peace and joy. O Father God, You are so, so good!
