Quiet Time with Jesus – from enemy to friend

What does James say makes one an “enemy of God”?

Answer: Friendship with the world. (James 4:1-10)

I am so vulnerable, so easily distracted by the world and its exciting new toys, new entertainment, new discoveries …

No wonder we have to retreat from the world and immerse in the Word …

A one-day retreat is not enough!

Pastor just preached about the caterpillar. It symbolizes transformation. God desires to see people transformed – from being an ‘enemy of God’ to being a ‘friend of God’.

The good news is: IT IS POSSIBLE!

BUT, we need to have a willing spirit to change. God gives every human being the free will to choose and He will NEVER take it back. Our God is full of grace, compassion, patience, loving kindness, gentleness, mercy … Thanks be to God!

What causes fights and quarrels among you? Don’t they come from your desires that battle within you? You want something but don’t get it. You kill and covet, but you cannot have what you want. You quarrel and fight. You do not have, because you do not ask God. When you ask, you do not receive, because you ask WITH WRONG MOTIVES, that you may spend what you get on your pleasures.

You adulterous people, don’t you know that friendship with the world is hatred toward God? Anyone who chooses to be a friend of the world becomes an ENEMY OF GOD. Or do you think Scripture says without reason that the spirit He caused to live in us envies intensely? But He gives us more grace. That is why Scripture says: “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.”

Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.

Come near to God and He will come near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded. Grieve, mourn and wail. Change your laughter to mourning and your joy to gloom. Humble yourselves before the Lord, and He will lift you up.
— James 4:1-10

These ten verses are enough for today to consume me. And if I am willing, it will change me …

It takes time and effort for a caterpillar to transform into a butterfly. Even at the point of breaking through and out to emerge as a transformed creature called the butterfly, he needs to struggle with all his might … with no help from anyone! No one is supposed to help otherwise he will die. That’s the way it is.

If we want to change, we must submit to the laws set by our Creator King – no compromise, no deviation …

Pastor said, “Pleasing God is not easy.” That sounds familiar. When I first accepted Christ in 2001, it didn’t take me long to discover that it is not easy to be a Christian! I had thought (foolishly) that I was already there but I was not!

Just think about the fruit of the Spirit: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. I had thought that I was the most patient person on earth but God had shown me otherwise! I must consume more of His Word until it consumes me!

My poem

Forget the past, let me move forward; I’ll stay focused; I’ll consume the Word;

I’ll not lose faith; I’ll let It consume me; From now to eternity, that’s my destiny!

I must keep my mind fixed on Jesus; I must work to accomplish His purpose;

Come on, time is running out! Are we ready for the drought?

Do not delay any more! Jesus Christ has already opened the door!

Jesus holds the passport to heaven; Come you all who are heavy-laden!

We don’t want to leave without it! Come live in us, O precious Holy Spirit!

Song: So You Would Come

Before the world began; You were on His mind; And every tear you cry; Is precious in His eyes; Because of His great love; He gave His only Son; Everything was done; So you would come.

Nothing you can do; Could make Him love you more; And nothing you’ve done could make Him close the door; Because of His great love; He gave His only Son; Everything was done; So you would come;

Come to the Father; Though your gift is small; Broken hearts, broken lives; He will take them all; The power of the Word; The power of His blood; Everything was done; So you would come …

Shalom!
