When I interview candidates to recruit as staff for a particular position, I do not choose the one with the highest qualification or the one who has the most experience. I would choose the one who is most suitable for the job.
How does God choose the one who is most suitable for His purposes?
I think He would first look for humility with a yearning heart, submission with surrender of self, followed by obedience and perseverance (h: humility; y: yearning; s: submission; s: surrender; o: obedience; p: perseverance – ‘hyssop’).
Do you want to be chosen by God?
It is a great honour to be chosen by God. The Bible says that many are invited but few are chosen (Matthew 22:14). The Bible also says that God chooses the foolish, the weak, the lowly and the despised – and the things that are not – to nullify the things that are (1 Corinthians 1:27-29).
God sees the heart of every person. His friendship is with people who truly know their poverty. Sometimes, what the world sees as ‘riches’ is ‘poverty’ in His eyes! Read Revelation 3:17. God can accomplish nothing with the person who thinks highly of himself.
Oswald Chambers (OC): As Christians we are not here for our own purpose at all – we are here for the purpose of God, and the two are not the same.
Some people say that they want to leave a ‘legacy’.
Do you want to leave a legacy too? What kind of legacy are you thinking of?
Actually, I consider myself ‘short-sighted’. I am not able to see far. On the other hand, God can see the end from the beginning. It would be foolish of me to try to do what I CAN DO to accomplish what HE CAN DO (through me).
When I am preparing for an important moment, I would feel very nervous. When I am ‘performing’ at that moment, I would fumble and make foolish mistakes! But if I leave everything in His hands, I would be amazed - I have had such moments in my life - thanks be to God!
Presence of mind
When I’m in a daze (aka ‘blur’), I become His instrument – He moves me to do what I could not do. By the power of the Holy Spirit, I would say what I normally would not say. The words sometimes do not make sense to me at all but it makes a lot of sense to the hearer. Thanks be to God!
What do you look for in a true friend?
A true friend is someone who does not talk about you (with ill intent) behind your back. A true friend is someone who talks about you in prayer and in love. A true friend is someone who does not judge (and / or condemn) you even when you do wrong. A true friend is not ‘dumb’ or ‘blind’ to the truth! A true friend is someone who recognizes what is wrong and prays for you fervently and relentlessly, trusting God all the time. Truly, truly, there is a desperate need for prayer. It is not because God doesn’t know the situation but it is because God sees our hearts when we pray. God said to Solomon: “I have heard your prayer… if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land. God continued to say, “Now my eyes will be open and my ears attentive to the prayers offered…” Let us be reminded that each one of us is a temple of the Holy Spirit.
What do we do in the temple of God?
We worship. We praise. We pray. We give thanks.
Paul urges us to offer our bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God – this is our spiritual act of worship (Romans 12).
