“By the grace of God, I am what I am … oh, that sounds ‘proud’ …”
The way we continually talk about our own inabilities is an insult to our Creator … we say things such as, “Oh, I shouldn’t claim to be sanctified; I’m not a saint.” But to say that before God means, “No, Lord, it is impossible for You to save and sanctify me; there are opportunities I have not had and so many imperfections in my brain and body; no, Lord, it isn’t possible.” That may sound wonderfully humble to others, but before God it is an attitude of defiance.
In God’s eyes, the purest expression of humility is – “Thank You LORD, by Your grace, I am saved and sanctified. Amen.”
Christians who are truly humble believe, trust, and obey God’s Word over what they think, reason, feel, or desire. Consequently, they depend completely on God’s ability rather than their own. They seek His will, not their own or another’s. They’re on His mission.
Unquote (emphasis mine)
About a year after Israel came out of Egypt, the Lord commanded Moses,
God’s directive was clear – no uncertainty.
So Moses sent out 12 leaders … 10 men were “humble” and 2 were “proud”. The “humble” expressed concern for their wives and children … They said that it was IMPOSSIBLE to take the land!
That may sound “humble” but before God it is an attitude of defiance!
On the other hand, the “proud” said, “We can do it! The Lord God has promised it to us.”
The 10 spies counseled against entering the Promised Land. Their reasoning seemed sound, logical, and prudent, but they drew from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil rather than the promise and wisdom of God.
Dear Father God
We do not want to be proud before You. We want to be clothed with true humility.
Genuine humility is to have faith in You because when we are humble we rely on You and trust in Your power and not on our own ability. Help us to understand that unbelief is pride.
Father God, we are on Your mission. Fulfill Your purposes through our lives. We believe that our individual life is of priceless value to Your purposes. Help us to understand that humility and faith works hand in hand. Thank You LORD!
