Quiet Time with Jesus – Stand Firm and Pray

Friday, 31 July 2015

Everyone has experienced feelings of failure and weariness. The intense discouragement and weariness felt from time to time by us had also afflicted Jesus. We get tired and it is okay to admit it. Yet though we might get tired in our service, we must never tire of it.

Jesus Himself was weary from His journey when He stopped at Sychar’s well and asked for a drink of water (John 4:6).

Jesus must have wrestled with a sense of weariness and maybe even confusion, searching deep within Himself for a meaning to what He is doing. Then, by an effort of will, Jesus reconnects with God’s perspective on things … Jesus reaffirms His willingness to leave the outcome of His ministry in God’s hands (Matthew 26:36-46).

We are told to put on the full Armor of God and stand firm … (Ephesians 6:10-20)

Jesus was led by the Spirit into the desert to be tempted by the devil (Matthew 4).

What did Jesus stand firm on? [God’s commands]

What did Satan tempt Jesus with? [God’s promises]

Sometimes, when we pray … we limit God by telling Him what to do.
Sometimes, when we pray … we nag at Him.

Nagging is saying something again and again, again and again, again and again.

But, in the process of ‘nagging’, and in His mercy, we internalize and remind ourselves of - His power, His promises, His love … Praise be to God! Thank God for His mercy!

God is good. He works all things for our good and for His glory. Amen! Hallelujah!

Sometimes, God allows … to bring us through ‘it’ – so that we experience and know what ‘it’ is like before He steps in … to rescue us, pick us up, lead us out, or to lift us up.

He enlightens us, equips us, prepares us, and strengthens us for greater works. Thanks be to God!

Many times God is grieved when we are stubborn, rebellious, defiant, or proud. He must have said something like, “How long must I teach you?” But our God never gives up on us. LOVE never gives up. His LOVE endures forever. His LOVE is everlasting. His KINDNESS is everlasting.

He is called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
— Isaiah 9:6b

When my children were young, I set a ‘3 times’ rule in disciplining them: “I will tell you only 3 times. If you don’t listen, I will …”

I 'abide' by the same rule too … One time I was upset with a sister-in-Christ. I got over it the 1st time. I got over it the 2nd time. I got over it the 3rd time. It was getting harder … When she did ‘it’ the 4th time, I lost control of myself …

So, the devil knows our limit too! He uses it against us. [God did not reveal this to me immediately. It was only when I was still, that He revealed. I grieved. I sought His forgiveness. Truly, it is through suffering that I am enlightened and equipped.]

“Satan, you cannot fool me again! No way! My God is with me. To God be the glory!”

Paul: Therefore, my dear brothers, stand firm. Let nothing move you. Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain.
— 1 Corinthians 15:58
Paul: We do not want you to be uninformed about the hardships we suffered in the province of Asia. We were under great pressure, far beyond our ability to endure, so that we despaired even of life. Indeed, in our hearts we felt the sentence of death. But this happened that we might not rely on ourselves but on God, who raises the dead. He has delivered us from such a deadly peril, and He will deliver us. On Him we have set our hope that He will continue to deliver us as you help us by your prayers. Then many will give thanks on our behalf for the gracious favor granted us in answer to the prayers of many.
— 2 Corinthians 1:8-11

My Prayer

Dear Father God

I thank You for bearing with all our nonsense. Your patience never wears out. Your love never gives up.

Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my thoughts. Point out anything in me that offends You, and lead me along the path of everlasting life. Amen.
— Psalm 139:23-24

We do not have the details of all the hardships our brothers and sisters-in-Christ are suffering right now but we can pray. Yes! We want to pray for Your Kingdom to come in fullness, for Your Will to be done on earth as it is in heaven. Amen!

Remind us not to rely on ourselves but on You. You will deliver us – in Your time, in Your way – our hope is in You LORD!

Remind us to pray - without ceasing - for our ‘family’ - not just for our biological family, but for our Church Family. Thank You LORD!

In Jesus’ wonderful and glorious name I pray.
Amen.

Jesus said, “Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation.”
— Matthew 26:41

Father, not my will but Yours be done. Amen.
