I went to my first retreat on 7 October 2010, ten years after I accepted Christ. Before I reached the venue, the Holy Spirit gave me a word ‘empty’.
At the retreat, our pastor showed us a video on letting go of our baggage … (Affirmation of the word ‘empty’: to empty is to let go)
The next word that the Holy Spirit gave me was ‘practise’. At that time, I was focusing on learning how to pray. So, I interpreted the word to mean ‘practise praying’ … and I did.
Today, I think the two words mean more than what I thought they meant in 2010.
Emptying one’s mind is on-going. We need to let go of thoughts that are not of God.
Putting to practice what the Holy Spirit is teaching us through the Word of God is also on-going.
Therefore, we must keep moving forward, our mind fixed on Christ so that we may grow and mature in Him.
Recollection: The theme of our church camp in 2014 was ‘FOCUS’ – Fixed on Christ, United in spirit. Praise the LORD!
Recently, a sister-in-Christ shared about her struggles. She described three incidents that had caused hurt. The Holy Spirit spoke through me, “These three incidents are like seeds planted in your heart. They are bad seeds. If you allow these seeds to grow, they will become bigger. You need to remove them – dig them out – make it a clean job. Then, you will have three holes. You need to let them heal. It takes time. Fill them up with the Word. Allow the Holy Spirit to fill them up. Let Him guide you step by step.
Whenever a bad thought / negative feeling creeps in e.g. anger, resentment …, resist it. Reject it in the name of Jesus."
I shared with her what someone said to the enemy – "You want my hatred but I will not give it to you. You will not have my hatred." I love that. What a wonderful way to tell the devil off. Let all followers of Christ say that to Satan – "You will not have our hatred. Our Father is LOVE. We are children of LOVE. Therefore, we can only give love – love that is of GOD. We can only produce the FRUIT of the SPIRIT which is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Hallelujah! Praise God!
Dear Father God,
Help us to remember to look heavenward and cry “Father!” whenever we face trouble, feel anxious or need help. Our help comes from You, the Maker of heaven and earth. You will not let our feet slip – You who watch over us will not slumber; Indeed, You who watch over Israel will neither slumber nor sleep. You watch over us – You are our shade – the sun will not harm us by day, nor the moon by night. You will keep us from all harm – You will watch over our lives; You will watch over our coming and going both now and forevermore. (Psalm 121)
Jesus went frequently to You in prayer. Help us to put to practice what the Holy Spirit has taught us, is teaching us and will be teaching us.
Prayer shifts our focus away from our problems to You who is the One who can give us the answer, solution, or the next step to take.
Prayer takes our focus off ourselves – and our pain and confusion – to You, our Father God – who knows all, controls all, has all power, and is ALL-LOVING.
