Quiet Time with Jesus – Offspring

Wednesday, 18 November 2015

A teacher posted a picture of a boy with his arms folded on Instagram. The words next to the little boy are:

So, you just hit me because I hit my sister to teach me that it’s not okay to hit people?

The teacher’s comments: We can’t teach kids not to do something by doing the very thing they are not supposed to do. We can’t teach kids to handle things calmly and remain in control by losing our cool and yelling at them.

I am reminded of an incident in 2013 when a teacher lost control … and received a face-full of noodles from her brother. This incident broke my heart. Whenever my children fight with one another, it hurts me.

Can we imagine how deep we hurt Him each time we fight with one another?

Many incidents have occurred in the past thirty seven years. Life has not been a bed of roses. At one period of time it was pretty much like walking through thorns every day. Family life can be full of ‘blood, sweat and tears’. What a sad morning recalling these memories. I must not let sadness overwhelm me.

Then, I remember the movie ‘Inside Out’ – ‘Sadness’ was useful. ‘Sadness’ solved the problem. ‘Sadness’ could rebuild ... It was a good movie. For me, the most touching scene was when ‘Ping-pong’ decided to sacrifice himself so that ‘Joy’ can [reach the top and] continue her journey to 'save' the little girl [whose name I have forgotten] from destruction.

The take-home message for me was: ‘Joy’ alone is not enough. We need ‘sadness’ to make our life complete.

My Prayer

Dear Father God,

You know the cause of every incident. As I recall a specific incident, I want to pray for all students and their family members. Help us to realize that good grades are important BUT other things like soft hearts, kind words, and encouraging support are just as important. An A+ alone won’t change the world, BUT a truly compassionate heart will. Amen.

“Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.”
— Colossians 3:12

Help us to put Your Word to practice.

Father God, I pray that all Your beloved children will draw near to You. I pray that we will develop a truly intimate relationship with You so that the process of healing of our wounds in life can take place.

The most painful part is the initial breaking of our pride. When we discover the nature and character of Your Son, Jesus Christ, we will be impacted. The layers of wounds will be peeled from us like the layers of an onion. The layers in the soul will become tender and they will give way readily to Your loving and forgiving presence. Amen.

Indeed, life is short. It is packed with challenging possibilities. Life is uncertain. It is filled with challenging adjustments.

Jesus has promised us an abundant life'. The true meaning of ‘abundance’ is NOT material wealth or money. It is a package delivered to our front door each day … One may read: “Watch out! You better worry …” Another may read: “Danger! This will bring fear!” And another: “Impossible! You will never be able to handle it!”

Guess who is the sender?

Charles Swindoll: When you hear that [doorbell] ring, try something NEW. Have Jesus Christ answer the door for you. Unquote.

“The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly. I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep.”
— John 10:10-11

Jesus gave His Word. Would you trust Him?

Not my will but Yours be done. Amen.
